The Bugalugs Bum Thief Review

Reviewed by Zuzi Fort

A show worth waiting for. The first time I saw an adaptation of Tim Winton's beloved children's novel, The Bugalugs Bum Thief, was over ten years ago. I took my older daughter to see it, and we both loved it. In fact, I suspect I was something of an embarrassment for my daughter as I laughed and laughed till tears ran down my face. Could you top that?

Finally, this winter, I had a chance to find out. Taking along my older daughter and (the new addition to the family) my younger daughter, we braved the rain and found ourselves in the town of Bugalugs.

And the verdict?

Riverside Theatres and Red Line Productions have pulled off a real cheeky triumph with a delightful and hilarious adaptation of The Bugalugs Bum Thief.

From the moment the lights dim, its clear that this isn't your typical children's play. The plot kicks off with the quirky town of Bugalugs waking up to a bum-believable crisis: every single resident has lost their bum! Skeeta Anderson, Mick Misery, and Billy Marbles take it upon themselves to crack the case and recover the missing derrières, leading the audience on a bum-bling adventure full of laughs and surprises.

One of the most delightful aspects of this production is the inclusion of an on-stage musician, who isn’t tucked away in the orchestra pit but right in the thick of the action. The musician’s musical talents add a lively, interactive element to the show, making her feel like an extra character in the story. Her seamless integration into the performance helps drive the narrative and provides a bum-ping soundtrack that keeps the energy high.

The set, designed by James Lew, is ingeniously simple yet incredibly versatile. Using movable wooden blocks, the stage transforms effortlessly into various locales, from the bustling town square to mysterious hideouts. These blocks are manipulated by the cast with ease and flair, often becoming part of the action themselves. Coupled with creative shadow play, the set design effectively transports the audience to the whimsical world of Bugalugs.

Lighting, masterfully crafted by Veronique Benett, plays a crucial role in highlighting key narrative moments. The lighting shifts seamlessly from warm and inviting to sharp and dramatic, enhancing the emotional impact and guiding the audience’s focus. Whether casting a soft glow on an emotive scene of a beach or creating suspense with stark contrasts during a clue hunt, the lighting is pitch perfect.

The cast, including Ziggy Resnick, Madeline Li, and Toby Blome, deliver bum-tastic performances that are both heartfelt and side-splitting. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their knack for slapstick comedy keeps the audience in stitches. The stylized performances, reminiscent of classic vaudeville, add a layer of timeless charm to the production.

Singing and dancing are integral to the show's progression. Catchy songs and lively choreography help move the plot along while keeping the audience thoroughly entertained. The musical numbers perfectly complement the show's whimsical tone.

Audience participation is another highlight, inviting children and adults alike to get involved in the bum-believable fun. These interactive moments are skilfully woven into the story, ensuring the audience feels like an integral part of the adventure.

Overall, The Bugalugs Bum Thief is a must-see production that perfectly blends humour, heart, and creativity. It’s a bum-ping good time that leaves the audience laughing, cheering, and maybe even dancing in their seats. Don’t miss this delightful romp at Riverside Theatres Parramatta – it’s a show that will leave a lasting impression on your funny bone and your heart.

And the lesson? Bums are important!
