Schubert’s Winterreise

Reviewed by Georgia Cassimatis

Renowned for being one of the best acoustic venues in Australia, The Independent Theatre continues its 75 year tradition of adding culture and music to the city by showcasing artists in Opera, Chamber and Classical music with its Sunday sessions. This week it was serenaded with the brilliance and romance of complex, classical Composer Franz Schubert.

The Technical finesse of The Schubertiade was performed by artists from the Schubert Society: Soprano, Baritone, Piano, Violin and Cello, focusing on works of Schubert’s last couple of years before he died, when he was not in a good way: years which revealed a composer dealing with the darker side of the human mind, and relationships estranged.

The beautiful musico-lyrical Winterreise (Winter Journey) composition, sung by both Soprano and Baritone showed the extraordinary depths he reached in several chillingly dark songs of this period, exploring his existential angst at being a wanderer who is nowhere at home. The opening phrase, ‘A stranger I came, a stranger I depart’ set the scene for the journey of intense, energetic, frenetic, exciting music to follow.
