Children Are Stinky Review

Farts, farts, glorious farts!

So, buckle up, hold onto your noses and get ready to laugh your pants off as the Riverside Theatre proudly hosts; "Children Are Stinky!" presented by Circus Trick Tease. Get your gas masks; I mean, tickets for this award-winning kid’s comedy because it is a real gas!

"Children Are Stinky" has been the talk of the town, winning the sought-after Children’s Choice Award and becoming a three-time sell-out sensation at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This top-notch circus act has blown away audiences around the world, leaving both adults and their little stinkers in awe.

Featuring the fabulously funky Lady Stink-a-lot, Josie Wardrope (Circus Oz), and the hilariously odorous Mr Smelly Pants, Sam Aldham (Dislocate), this dynamic duo sets out to prove beyond reasonable doubt that kids are stinky. Their bumbling attempts result in a whirlwind of messy, ridiculous, and side-splittingly funny antics with a dash of madness and a whiff of audacity.

Taking along my ten-year-old plus-one, I was in the mood for some heartwarming, belly-shaking, laugh-till-you-cry entertainment. I certainly got my wish, and so did my wanna-be-cool offspring. Though she tried to hide it, I caught her in the uncool act of laughing. With its colourful yet simple set and lighting design, the show is a perfect blend of innovative stagecraft and jaw-dropping acrobatics, with a narrative that's as entertaining as a well-timed toot.

I particularly loved hearing the kids’ “oohs” and “ahs” as they watched the magic happen on stage. It really hit home that there were no special effects, hidden cables, or clever camera work. “She really – REALLY - stood on his head!” (To understand the reference, please see the show.)

Another aspect of this fart, I mean farce, that I loved was the audience interaction. Down with the fourth wall! The performers talk to you, not at you. And the audiences love it. There was feet-stomping and arm-waving, and that’s just from the parents. The kids went wild!

It was encouraging to see kids who often seem more at home talking to an AI than to each other jump up and volunteer to pit their skills against these absurd circus performers. The children truly stepped up and showed off their smarts, coordination, and imagination and their ability to play. And we all learned a valuable lesson: Everybody farts!

With top-tier acrobatics, a plethora of bum jokes, and a superb '90s mash-up, this show is a blast from the past that will have parents and kids in stitches. "Children Are Stinky" is a fun-filled experience for all ages, encouraging youngsters to be proud of their unique, quirky smells, I mean selves. So, don’t hold it in—grab your tickets and prepare for a side-splitting, rib-tickling, stinky good time!

This show truly puts the art back in fart.
