Jacky

Information

From 16 January – 2 February 2025, Belvoir St Theatre, as part of Sydney Festival’s Blak Out program, presents the award-winning play Jacky, by Declan Furber Gillick, a comedically raw portrayal of a young, Queer, Indigenous man trying to find his feet in the city.

Enlivened by Guy Simon (Holding the Man), Greg Stone (August: Osage County), Mandy McElhinney (Tiny Beautiful Things), Danny Howard making his Belvoir debut, and directed by Mark Wilson (Melbourne Theatre Company’s Bighouse Dreaming), Jacky is a poignant and timely portrayal of the difficulties in balancing brotherhood, cultural identity and capital in 21st century Australia.

Jacky appears to have the hang of city life in Melbourne, Australia... he’s working as an intern, paying the bills and negotiating the gig economy, but the underlying secrets of these various lives in the white world begin to unravel when Keith, his unemployable younger brother, comes to town.

As he navigates the intertwining of private life, work life and culture, the audience witnesses Jacky calling the shots, in this thoughtful exploration of a young man finding acceptance within himself.
